The premise

Music no one plays.

Neural Ritual turns the invisible activity of the mind into sound and light. A participant wears an EEG headset that reads their brainwaves in real time. Their shifting states of focus and relaxation are translated, through a live generative system, into an evolving soundscape of drones and meditative textures — and into visuals that breathe and move with them.

There is no controller and no instrument to learn. As the mind quiets, the music deepens and the imagery softens; the space becomes a mirror, reflecting your inner state back to you through sound and image. The deeper you go, the more the environment responds — a feedback loop between mind and machine, where the sound you hear is the state you're in.

System overview

Skull to room, in five stages

01

EEG headset

Raw brainwaves, streamed continuously from the participant.

02

Live processing

Band analysis — delta through gamma, extracted frame by frame.

03

Generative system

Bands drive sound and visuals as one composition, not two.

04

Sound output

Spatial audio — the field moves around the body, not at it.

05

Visual output

Projection wrapping the room, driven from the same signal.

Brainwave states, mapped

Move the state. Watch the field answer.

No headset here — this is a stand-in for the signal path, driven by a slider instead of a skull. In the room, this line is you.

What happens to you

01

Enter

The space is calm. You sit. You breathe.

02

Connect

The headset is placed. The system begins listening.

03

Response

Sound and visuals emerge from your brain activity.

04

Reflection

The environment mirrors your state in real time.

05

Deepen

As you go deeper, the ritual transforms.

Collective

Multiple minds create a single shared experience.

Visual language

A mirror of the invisible

Visual reference — a dense field of golden particles scattering through dark space. Visual reference — fine white filaments streaming in parallel like combed light. Visual reference — soft pink and blue smoke folding through itself. Visual reference — a violet geometric mandala with a bright core. Visual reference — a warm golden bloom of radiating filaments.

Sound language

Five things the room can say

Drones

Deep, evolving tones — the floor the piece rests on.

Textures

Layered, organic soundscapes that thicken as you settle.

Pulses

Subtle rhythms taken directly from the brainwave stream.

Harmonics

Resonant overtones and chimes that surface in calm states.

Spatial

3D sound that moves around the body rather than facing it.

A space that breathes with you

A round room. One low plinth at its centre. A ring of fixtures overhead and a curved surface to throw light onto — nothing pointed at the participant, everything wrapped around them.

The architecture does one job: remove every other thing to look at. Once there is nothing in the room but your own signal, the feedback loop has your full attention — and you have its.

The arc

One mind first. Then many.

Solo

One participant, one headset, one room. A private ceremony — long enough to stop performing for the machine and start listening to what it's telling you about yourself.

Inspired by Farah Shretah

Neural Ritual exists because of Farah Shretah and her project Anxiety as a Gift — work that treats an inner state as material rather than a problem to be solved.

Without her, this idea would never have come up.

Want to host the first one?

Neural Ritual needs a quiet, dark space and people willing to sit still in it. If you have a venue, a festival corner or a residency that fits, I'd like to hear about it.
